How do we value art? Different groups of people and institutions, play roles in assigning art values, but can these values be truthful judges of a piece's value?

The art market has a large influence on the public perception of “value” for artworks, due to the fact that the monetary label in any capitalist society is widely regarded as a highly effective and objective means to judge the total value of an object. Cultural institutions, tasked with missions such as art pedagogy, also frame the aesthetics and thus valuation we associate with work. How then, does an individual critique an artwork from his or her own perspective, and understand an artwork for themselves? Where does the artist stand amidst all of such external factors?

Staged Art is an exhibition created in response to this, and aims to expose the structure of the art market: how artists exist and are influenced by the market’s larger macrocosm and how people choose to judge the value of art. We seek to prompt viewers to examine their own perception of value, whilst highlighting some of these underpinning mechanisms. Some elements of the art market have been appropriated and warped, resulting in an orchestrated presentation of reality.

(Do come and join this little experiment of sorts; we want you to be part of this ongoing process, through your personal investigation into why you simply love/hate some work)
