More about papier mache mask

Dear Parents

The children presented their papier mache mask to the class this week. I was enthralled by the colours and forms. Some children were inspired by images online and developed their own ideas thereafter. Others had inputs from families members and friends.
It may appear tedious to complete the mask and perhaps the end product is not as expected. Have you ever thought about what the pupils gained in the process of doing the work? Please take some time to view this short video:

These are just some examples of pupils' work. Thank you so much for supporting your children!

Week 6: Paper Mache Mask

The children gave their paper mache the first layer of paint. Poster paint was provided so that they can work within the time frame. They can use their water colour/ poster paint at home. The first layer of paint acts like a base. The subsequent colours they paint will make their masks more vibrant.

This balloon had shrunk because the artist waited for a day or two to apply another layer of newspaper.  :(

Drying paper mache
I use a metaphor to explain the importance of doing good work from the beginning to the children. I'm sure the P3 children are very familar with doing Math work problems. If their assumptions from the beginning (e.g. wrong operation used) is wrong, then their method/ working will be wrong in the end. An artwork done in a slipshod manner is similar to a work problem done in a careless manner. The same goes for doing art, do it well and do it properly. If your child failed in his/ her first attempt, encourage them to try it again. When they worked hard on something they had done, they will feel good about their work and themselves.

Ningxi attached elastic bands on her mask.

Most children are very keen to complete their masks. Thank you parents for supporting your children! Please continue to encourage them so they can produce their best work.

Week 5: Paper Mache Mask

An example of how the balloon can be secured between the desk and the table for convenience.
The size of an inflated balloon should not be too small (as big as an A4 size paper) as it will shrink after a few days. Tear the newspaper vertically (not horizontally otherwise you are likely to end up with chunks) in strips. If you find that your balloon is shrinking rapidly, it means that... there's a hole! Look for it and fix the problem with scrotch tape.

You can use your fingers/ a brush to apply the white glue (Do not use gluestick) on the balloon/ newspaper. Make sure that every edge of the newspaper is covered with white glue. It's ok if it is wet. If you are using a brush, make sure the brush is not left on its own for a few hours... the glue will dry and damage the bristles!

IMPORTANT: You need to wait for each layer of newspaper to dry thoroughly before you apply a new layer. Repeat the process until you complete 4 layers of newspaper. The last layer MUST BE a piece of plain white paper/ white tissue paper. Cover only half of the balloon with newspaper. Remember, you're making a mask.

The above sample is not perfect but you get the idea. In case you wonder, the balloon will eventually shrink and fall out. The newspaper mache retained the shape.

Begin With The End in Mind.  How would you design your mask? We will paint the mask during Art lesson in Week 6.

Week 4: secondary colours

The pupils created secondary colours by mixing two of the primary colours. Can your children name the secondary colours?

IMPORTANT: Bring these items in Week 5
1) strips of newspaper kept in a bag
2) white glue (you can make your own glue by cooking starch but the artwork MIGHT get eaten by bugs...or turned mouldy in room temperature after a few days)
3) a balloon (round)

We will be making paper mache mask for the next few lessons.
